How To Remove Background From Product Photos

Using The Pen Tool- The Most Pupolers technique

Pretty decent for complicated images, although it might be slightly time-consuming.

Pick the Pen Tool and create an anchor point by clicking anywhere on the product’s edges.

If the edge is straight, then click again to make a second point and create a straight line. In case the edge is curved, then click and drag the point to make an arc.

Remember, you can always delete and redo the points by pressing the Backspace key.

Since it creates a handle with the arc, you can make it longer or shorter to change the curve intensity. Plus, you’ll see that the handle has two parts where one adjusts the existing arc and the other is for the following arc. So, if you click again and make a third point or line. You can change its intensity by moving the second part of the handle.  

Hold the CTRL key and click on the points to adjust accordingly.

This way, follow the edges and outline them. Complete the circuit by clicking on the first point.

Then, right-click the image. Choose Make Selection from the menu and click Ok.

Next, go to Select and pick Inverse. It’ll outline the background minus the object. However, it’s not necessary if the outline is already inverted.

Now, just press the Delete key to remove the background. You can also undo it by using CTRL+Z.

Using The Magic Wand Tool

A straightforward tool for product photos with simple backgrounds.

Locate the tool from the bar on your left. It can be hidden behind the Object Selection Tool or Quick Selection Tool.

Clicking on the tool will auto-select the background based on color similarity. If it misses any small part, press the Shift key and then click on that part to add it.

Lastly, hit the Backspace key. This will remove the background and make it white. If you still find some parts of the background, you can continue adding the pieces by holding the key and clicking on them.

Another way is to use an eraser to remove them. But first, go to Select from the top bar and pick Deselect first.

Magic Eraser Tool

A quick way to remove background from product photos.

This tool can be hidden behind the Eraser Tool or Background Eraser Tool. You don’t have to work a lot with this one. Just select it and click anywhere on the background. It’ll remove the parts that are similar in colors.

You can also use an eraser for the small parts. Since it makes the background transparent, you can make it white by using the Paint Bucket Tool and clicking on the checkered back.

Lasso Tool

For the intricate curves and parts, you can either use Polygonal Lasso or a Magnetic Lasso tool. While the former creates a linear line, the latter auto-selects the border as you move the cursor around the object.

You just have to click on the point from where you started to finalize the selection. Then, press the Backspace and remove it.

Another useful tool is Freehand Lasso Tool. This is for the image that doesn’t have complex backgrounds. Just select the object by pointing around it and then go to the Select tab and choose Inverse. Then, remove the background by pressing the Backspace.
